Full Moon Snowshoe Tour Sunday, December 23, 2007

Full (Cold) Moon Snowshoe Tour along Spruce Brook to the summit of Sugar Hill. Meet at the
Welcome Center on the Hazen's Notch Road, 7:00 PM. Adults $3, Children $1.
HNA Members Free. Snowshoe rentals $4. Reservations required by 5 p.m. the
day before.The tour will be cancelled if it rains Sunday evening.
Boreal Habitats of Northern Vermont and Quebec Saturday, January 5, 2008
 Learn about the plants and animals of boreal habitats in northern Vermont and Quebec and where to find them. Jeffrey Parsons, of Lowell, Vermont is a Wildlife Biologist & Ecologist for Arrowwood Environmental. Jeff will share his knowledge of the north's coldest regions as well as fascinating stories of the native Cree people of Quebec.

Natural resource managers, ecologists & environmental educators lead presentations on a variety of topics. Session 1: 10:00 - 11:30 (A) Wildlife tracking/winter tree identification/beaver pond ecology; Session 2: 1:00 - 2:30 (A) Winter Adaptations, maple sugaring; (B) Forest ecology & stewardship. Bill Caney Memorial X-C Ski Tour begins at 10:00 AM at the Welcome Center on the Hazen's
Notch Road in Montgomery. All trail fees this day will be dedicated to the HNA Campership Fund in memory of Dr. Wilbur H. Caney.

A Celebration of Winter Birds Saturday, February 2, 2008
 Learn about some of the familiar birds of northern Vermont that visit backyard feeders. Deborah Benjamin, Staff Naturalist of the Hazen's Notch Association and President of the Vermont Botanical & Bird Club, will present images and sounds, and lead a discussion of forest and field birds that live here year-round as well as some unusual ones that visit only during certain winters.

Climb Burnt Mountain Sunday, February 10, 2008
 Join your friends and neighbors as we climb Burnt Mountain. 2.4 miles each way; 1,600' vertical climb; strenuous with panoramic views. Meet at the Welcome Center Sunday at 9:30 am. Bring a snack or lunch and something to drink. Call 326-4799 Saturday the 9th before 5 pm for more information.
Snowshoe rentals available for $10. No trail fee for those joining the tour.
Citizen's X-C Ski
Race Sunday, February 17, 2008

Ted Means Memorial X-C Ski Race sponsored by the Hazen's Notch
Association. Race begins at 10:00 AM at the Welcome Center on the Hazen's
Notch Road in Montgomery. Adults: $8, Children $5. 5 and 10 km distances.
Prizes to all finishers include Vermont Maple Syrup from the High Ponds Farm.

February Vacation Day Camp Tuesday, February 26 through Thursday, February 28,
2008  Outdoor fun for children ages 6-12 at the Welcome Center on Route
58, the Hazen's Notch Road, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day. Children may
attend any 1 or more days.
Activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tracking, snow caves, and native american stories in the tipi near Bear Paw Pond.
HNA Education Staff will lead activities in small groups and provide all instruction necessary for children to advance their skills while having lots of fun.
The cost is $12 per child/per day for
HNA members; $15 per child/per day for non-members.
Please note that February Vacation Day Camp 2008 is only three days: Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.
Common Sense on Climate Saturday, March 8, 2008

What we know, what we think we might know & what we don't know about climate. Mark Breen, Senior Meteorologist for the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury & for Vermont Public Radio's Eye on the Sky will get past the hype, the rhetoric & the media, to present a basic look at climate. Breen's program will include discussions on what we know about past & present climate, the progress being made in understanding this very complex system, & where current research is taking us.

Bear Den Trail Snowshoe Climb Sunday, March 16, 2008
 Climb the Bear Den Trail to the un-named summit along the ridge from Burnt Mountain to Haystack. 5 miles round-trip. Elevation gain 1,500'. Strenuous.  The Hazen's Notch Association is planning a series of lectures and workshops pertaining to Vermont's varied wildlife habitats. Wildlife Biologists will present information about plant and animal species that occupy specific habitats. Ecologists and Natural Resource Managers will lead workshops in the field to teach landowners how to manage their property for species relevant to the specific habitats.
Detailed event listings will be posted on this calendar in early 2008.
Gardening Education Programs For Families with Young Children
Join Montgomery Community Gardens in 2008 for free Gardening Education programs offered on 2 Fridays each month May through October. These fun programs are oriented to younger chldren but are successful for all children up to age 12. Programs fit the time of the season and what plants are maturing both in the gardens and nearby in nature. Hands-on activities last year included Starting Seeds, Building Soil, Planting the Garden, Wild Strawberries, Garden Bugs & Butterflies, Woodland Garden Wildflowers, Making Jam & Juice, Pressed Flower Notecards & Herbs, Plant Dyes & Pesto, Tomato Sauce & Salsa. Wildlife Biologists will present information about plant and animal species that occupy specific habitats. Ecologists and Natural Resource Managers will lead workshops in the field to teach landowners how to manage their property for species relevant to the specific habitats.

Fern Walk Sunday, June 1, 2008
Walk the HNA trails with a naturalist and learn about Vermont's many ferns. We will see Hay Scented, Sensitive, Lady, Beech, New York, Marsh, Bracken, Cinnamon, Interrupted, Royal, Ostrich, Maidenhair, Oak, Braun's Holly, Polypody, and Christmas ferns as well as Mountain, Marginal, Intermediate & Spinulose Woodferns.

 The 2008 Fall Nature Festival and Annual Meeting marks the 14th Anniversary of the Hazen’s Notch Association. To celebrate all that we have accomplished in our first 14 years, this year’s event will offer a day of fun and informative activities for adults and families that borrow from the HNA summer ecology camp and education programs.
