HNA Annual Meeting The History of the Common Loon: From Territorial Takeovers and Sibling Rivalry to Mercury Laziness and Satellite Tracking Eric Hanson will present the first in this winter's speakers series programs entitled "The History of the Common Loon: From Territorial Takeovers and Sibling Rivalry to Mercury Laziness and Satellite Tracking." Since 1998, Eric Hanson has been the biologist for the Vermont Loon Recovery Project, a joint program of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. Bill Caney Memorial X-C Ski Tour begins at 10:00 AM at the Welcome Center on the Hazen's
Notch Road in Montgomery. All trail fees this day will be dedicated to the HNA Campership Fund in memory of Dr. Wilbur H. Caney. Climb Burnt Mountain
Snowshoe rentals available for $10. No trail fee for those joining the tour. Bryophytes of Northern New England Dorothy Allard will present the second in this winter's speakers series programs, entitled "Bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) of Northern New England - what you can see and identify in winter." Dorothy Allard lives in Bakersfield and works as a consulting ecologist. She has an MS in Botany from the University of North Carolina and a PhD in Geography from Cambridge University. She became interested in bryophytes after taking a weekend class in 2000 and has been studying them ever since. Montgomery Town Library, 86 Route 242, Montgomery Center, 7:00 PM.

February Vacation Day Camp
Activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tracking, snow caves, and native american stories in the tipi near Bear Paw Pond. HNA Education Staff will lead activities in small groups and provide all instruction necessary for children to advance their skills while having lots of fun. The cost is $12 per child/per day for HNA members; $15 per child/per day for non-members.

Success by Six Winter Festival at Hazen's Notch Flora and Fauna of the Northern Long Trail Lexi Shear has a degree in Botany from the Field Naturalist Program at UVM and has worked as an ecologist for The Trust For Public Land. A veteran long distance hiker, she has thru-hiked the 2,700-mile Pacific Crest Trail and sectioned hiked Vermont’s Long Trail. Her numerous other hikes include a journey on the Salzburger Almenweg with her husband and 12 month old daughter. She lives with her family in Montpelier where she teaches biology and chemistry at Montpelier High School. P>

Join your friends and neighbors as we climb Burnt Mountain. 2.4 miles each way; 1,600' vertical climb; strenuous with panoramic views. Meet at the Welcome Center Sunday at 9:30 am. Bring a snack or lunch and something to drink. Call 326-4799 Saturday the 14th before 5 pm for more information. Snowshoe rentals available for $10. No trail fee for those joining the tour. The area around the Moosewood Ponds is a rich site supporting a great many species of native plants. Free. All ages. No Pets. 1 - 3 PMHigh Ponds Farm, 478 Rossier Road - 2 miles east of Montgomery Ctr on Rt 58, turn right on Rossier Rd - bear right at fork + drive to parking lot. Montgomery Center Fern Walk Come for a leisurely walk to see and learn about approximately 20 species of native ferns and related plants. The Bear Paw Pond Area is an ideal site for supporting a great many species of ferns. Free. All ages. One-week sessions of Day Camp for ages 6-14. Four sessions of Nature & Adventure Day Camp for ages 6-12 in 3 age groups: (6-7; 8-9; 10-12). Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. - 4
p.m. * Nature Camp Session 4 is offered to ages 6 through 9 only.
